Internship in Raptor and Avian Medicine
The Raptor Center offers a veterinary medical internship to provide hands on clinical training in raptor rehabilitation, as well as general avian medicine and surgery. Applications must be submitted via the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program. This internship is a one year program that begins in July, with two open positions filled annually.
Established in 1974, the Raptor Center specializes in the medical care, rehabilitation, conservation, and study of eagles, hawks, owls, falcons, and vultures. In addition to treating more than 1,000 birds a year, we provide training in raptor medicine and surgery for veterinarians from around the world, reach more than 150,000 people each year through public education programs and events, and identify emerging issues related to raptor health and populations.
Requirements
DVM or VMD degree from an AVMA-accredited College of Veterinary Medicine or ECFVG certification. Applicants must also have taken and passed the NAVLE test to be eligible to secure a Minnesota veterinary license. A TOEFL score is required for non-native English speakers.

Responsibilities
The primary duties and responsibilities revolve around the care of the wild raptors that present to The Raptor Center for rehabilitation including a broad spectrum of activities. Interns manage cases under the supervision of faculty and assist with all aspects of clinical care of raptors, including captive management, capture and restraint, anesthesia, diagnostics, necropsy, record-keeping and research projects.
- Provide primary patient care for a variety of hawks, owls, falcons, eagles, and vultures native to the upper Midwest
- Provide for the medical and surgical management of cases with the supervision and aid of staff veterinarians
- Assist with medical care of education raptors from local nature centers that present to TRC for preventative care and treatment of illnesses or injuries
- Consult with veterinarians and rehabilitators from across the nation regarding the medical care of native wildlife
- Provide clinical training to fourth year veterinary students and international veterinarians that complete externships at TRC, helping with workshops at TRC and giving an occasional lecture to students at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine
- Share on call duty (evenings and weekends included) to provide care to injured wildlife
- Participate in opportunities for academic learning, i.e. patient rounds, lectures, and academic learning groups
Internship in Wildlife and Raptor Medicine - Partners for Wildlife
Partners for Wildlife, in affiliation with The Raptor Center, offers this internship to improve, strengthen, and expand the capacity of wildlife rehabilitators and veterinarians to treat and rehabilitate injured wildlife in order to achieve the best and most humane outcomes. Applications must be submitted via the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program. This internship is a one year program that begins in July, with one open position filled annually.
Requirements

Interns will rotate between the College of Veterinary Medicine's Raptor Center and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota, a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation center.
- Provide primary patient care for a variety of avian, mammalian, and reptile species native to the upper Midwest
- Provide for the medical and surgical management of cases with the supervision and aid of staff veterinarians
- Assist with medical care of education raptors from local nature centers that present to TRC for preventative care and treatment of illnesses or injuries
- Consult with veterinarians and rehabilitators from across the nation regarding the medical care of native wildlife
- Provide clinical training to fourth year veterinary students and international veterinarians that complete externships at TRC and WRC, helping with workshops and giving an occasional lecture to students at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine
- Share on call duty (evenings and weekends included) to provide care to injured wildlife
- Participate in opportunities for academic learning, i.e. patient rounds, lectures, and academic learning groups
- Plan and facilitate bi-weekly clinical rounds (through web-conferencing) with wildlife rehabilitators and their veterinarians. Intern will be required to research topics in advance and consult with subject matter experts
- Contribute to research projects related to clinical care of wildlife and presentation of that work at a professional conference such as NWRA
